CNA FUNCTION:

Provide Direct patient care services under the supervision of the registered nurse or licensed practical nurse according to the philosophy, policies and procedures of the department of nursing.

CNA QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must have good mental and physical health, able to see and hear well, able to use hands and body well enough to perform basic functions.
  2. Should be 16 years of age or older.
  3. Successful completion of accredited nursing assistant training program AND certified in the State of Minnesota.
  4. Ability to anticipate physical, mental and emotional needs of geriatric patients.
  5. Ability to participate in care as an active team member, under the direction and guidance of charge nurse. 
  6. Willingness to accept responsibility, remain calm in emergencies, be pleasant, tactful and courteous in dealings with residents and their relatives as well as co-workers.

CNA PHYSICAL HAZARDS:

  • May be exposed to contagious disease. May be subject to physical and verbal aggression of residents.

CNA SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:

  • Helps maintain a clean/safe environment for residents and staff. 
  • Provides for resident safety.
  • Encourage use of appropriate supportive device, i.e., cane or walker.
  • Monitor environment for safety hazards.
  • Responsible for maintaining clean and orderly environment for resident and staff.
  • Assist other staff in keeping resident belongings in specified areas.
  • Assist with cleaning of resident wheelchairs and other equipment as needed. 
  • Maintain neat resident room order.
  • Sort resident personal and facility laundry and send to appropriate areas to be washed.
  • Helps maintain resident health and functional status.
  • Helps resident maintain their social interaction skills.
  • Remind and encourage attendance to group activities.
  • Contact social services if resident or family member has concerns.
  • Communicates effectively with staff.
  • Document pertinent information in resident record on a daily basis.
  • Reads and understands resident service plan.
  • Communicates significant changes in status to supervisor.
  • Reads Communication book frequently for updates.
  • Will be aware of resident's abilities and barriers to communication, adapting to their needs. Answer Call Lights promptly and relay necessary request in a timely manner.
  • Answer questions as appropriate, maintaining confidentiality of residents.
  • Respect and protect the privacy of each resident.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner.
  • Adheres to dress code.
  • Well groomed appearance – no offensive odors.
  • Wears jewelry only as in compliance with dress code.
  • Notifies supervisor of bonafide illness within policy parameters.
  • Is prepared to verify illness when requested to do so.
  • Behaves in a caring, respectful and pleasant manner.
  • Explains procedures and interventions to residents.
  • Respectful and supportive to fellow workers. 
  • Courteous and helpful to all family and friends of resident.
  • Continues to receive professional training and education.
  • Exercises good decision-making skills.
  • Recognizes changes in resident condition & notifies charge nurse of change in resident condition.
  • Other duties as needed.

ADDENDUM TO CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA) FOR CNA'S ASSIGNED TO HOME HEALTH WITH APARTMENT AND CUSTOMIZED CARE RESIDENTS

In addition to the above-described responsibilities, the following responsibilities are needed and specific to Apartment and Customized Care Residents:

  • Get meal supplies and Set tables for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Serve meals
  • Assist residents with personal cares as needed or directed by nurse
  • Schedule Appointments
  • Get resident vitals and weights
  • Assist residents with personal cares as needed or directed by nurse. This may include bathing, oral care, back care, dressing, hair care (grooming in general), shaving, foot soaks, dressing changes, Scheduling of Doctor appointments, getting resident vitals and weights, passing resident medications, and other activities of daily living (ADL's) that are deemed necessary.
